Why Organic Cotton is a Must for Babies | A Petit Clouds Manual for New Parents

Every memory is precious. It is more precious when it is a memory of a baby’s smile. – Debasish Mridha

And of course, you would want to maintain that precious smile. But what if we tell you that this smile can turn into a frown or stream of tears if the baby is uncomfortable even for a second. Think of it as this way, how would you feel if the world is new and you are unable to communicate, rather you’re not even supposed to say a word yet because you don’t know how to. Inconvenient, right? Well, that’s how your baby feels when you wrap them in uncomfortable fabrics.

Unpopular opinion – polyester is not a good choice for babies. Yes, you read that right! No matter how easy it is to maintain and how cost-effective it is, polyester is just not the right material for newborns. It’s a well-known fact that a newborn’s skin is sensitive and prone to different skin infections. Hence, replacing every other material with pure cotton is crucial. From their bedsheets to towels, every piece of clothing touching their body should be comfortable and breathable enough, especially in summer.

In a recent conversation with Dr. Saroja Balan (Pediatrician), we asked her to shed some light on why she recommends buying cotton to new parents. Dr. Balan says, “Like every individual, a newborn baby’s body functions by maintaining its temperature through sweat and that’s where cotton makes their life easier. It absorbs the moisture and helps their skin stay rash-free.”

In addition to this, she also has an advice for the new moms – For the first six months, your baby should only have a layer more than what you are wearing.  In simpler terms, the lesser layers, the better for your tiny tot. She says, “Using synthetic material can cause some serious skin diseases such as newborn acne and eczema. Parents should take a cue and store as much cotton clothes as they can even before the baby arrives.”

Take it one step at a time

We’re here to help you because let’s face it, as easy as it sounds, taking care of a new life is overwhelming. If you’re new to parenthood, there’s definitely a lot on your plate already and jumping to conclusions is the last thing you would want to do. Research a bit and make an informed decision about how to choose and buy GOTS – certified organic apparels. Pick a product or two from an established brand and see how your baby reacts to it.

Concerned about the cost?

Well, like most new parents there’s no reason why you wouldn’t be careful with money. However, not every organic cotton brand is heavy on the pocket. A life-saving tip is to shortlist a few of them and go through the reviews before buying. While most of the brands boast of being pure, it’s imperative that the fabric has gone through rigorous lab tests to ensure quality and longevity.

Once you have chosen a brand according to the cost and quality, rest assured that your baby is going to have a blissful sleep (of course, when they are in the mood for it). Apart from the aforementioned benefits of buying organic cotton, one factor that distinguishes the best from mediocre fabric is its resistance to sunrays. Pure cotton is built to last for years without fading in the sun, while maintaining its natural shade and texture. So choose well and only the finest.
